Effect of queen cell size on morphometric characteristics of queen honey bees (<i>Apis mellifera ligustica</i>)

چکیده

Rearing techniques are important to determine a successful honey bee production. Queen cell cup size may affect the acceptance rate of grafted larvae and queen’s size, which in turn influence quality colonies. The present study compared effect different queen sizes (8.0 vs 9.0 mm diameter) on morphometric characteristics bees. Sixty-five were each treatment. Larvae transfer was carried out five times, June August 2019. Head, thorax abdomen width newly emerged queens measured using an electronic calliper, weight three segments recorded precision scale. All traits accepted significantly (p < .001) higher raised larger cups, except for head width. Principal Component Analysis shows values PC1 (58.4% explained variance) cups. Highest loadings found variables related parts. Among many factors affecting quality, seems have positive queens’ body parts weights.HIGHLIGHTSIncreasing standard diameter conventional cups allows rearing heavier queens. The grafting period affects parameters, with last decade June.

The Effects of Pesticides on Queen Rearing and Virus Titers in Honey Bees (Apis mellifera L.)

The effects of sublethal pesticide exposure on queen emergence and virus titers were examined. Queen rearing colonies were fed pollen with chlorpyrifos (CPF) alone (pollen-1) and with CPF and the fungicide Pristine(®) (pollen-2). Fewer queens emerged when larvae from open foraging (i.e., outside) colonies were reared in colonies fed pollen-1 or 2 compared with when those larvae were reared in o...

Diet and Cell Size Both Affect Queen-Worker Differentiation through DNA Methylation in Honey Bees (Apis mellifera, Apidae)

BACKGROUND Young larvae of the honey bee (Apis mellifera) are totipotent; they can become either queens (reproductives) or workers (largely sterile helpers). DNA methylation has been shown to play an important role in this differentiation. In this study, we examine the contributions of diet and cell size to caste differentiation. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS We measured the activity and gen...

Brain transcriptomes of honey bees (Apis mellifera) experimentally infected by two pathogens: Black queen cell virus and Nosema ceranae

Regulation of gene expression in the brain plays an important role in behavioral plasticity and decision making in response to external stimuli. However, both can be severely affected by environmental factors, such as parasites and pathogens. In honey bees, the emergence and re-emergence of pathogens and potential for pathogen co-infection and interaction have been suggested as major components...

Queen pheromone modulates brain dopamine function in worker honey bees.

Honey bee queens produce a sophisticated array of chemical signals (pheromones) that influence both the behavior and physiology of their nest mates. Most striking are the effects of queen mandibular pheromone (QMP), a chemical blend that induces young workers to feed and groom the queen and primes bees to perform colony-related tasks. But how does this pheromone operate at the cellular level? T...

The Use of the Vibration Signal and Worker Piping to Influence Queen Behavior during Swarming in Honey Bees, Apis mellifera

Honey bee colonies reproduce through swarming, in which about half the workers and the laying queen leave the natal nest and form a cluster in nearby vegetation. After a new nest cavity has been selected, the entire swarm cluster and the queen must become airborne and move en masse to the chosen site. Failure of the queen to leave the natal nest or relocate to the new nest cavity will result in...
